let the amount of speedboats = x
this means that speedboats is 3*x = 3x
52 = 3x+x
52= 4x
52/4 = x
13 = x
there are 13 speedboats. 3*13 is 39. There are therefore 39 sailboats

s= number of sailboats and m= number of motor boats

s + m = 52
s= 3 = m

3m + m =52
4m = 52
m= 13 speedboats
and
s = 3*13= 39 sailboats
